Q: What's the make-up of the District Committee?

A: The 8th District Committee has 11 voting members:

  • Chairman (2-year term, elected at District Conventions);
  • 3 State Central members (4-year terms, elected at District Conventions);
  • 4 chairmen of the unit committees (or other designee if the local chairman does not reside within the 8th District),

        • Virginia Federation of Republican Women,
        • College Republican Federation of Virginia, and
        • Young Republican Federation of Virginia
See list of current Committee members. The organization of the District Committee is specified by the State Party Plan.

Although not required, District Committee members are usually members of their respective unit committees as well. All voting members of the District Committee must be registered to vote in the 8th District. (Check the precinct list to see if you're in the 8th District.)

Q: What are the functions of the District Committee?

A: The 8th District Committee:

  • determines the method for nominating the Republican candidate for Congress
  • holds a District Convention every two years to elect party officers.
  • assists Republican campaigns and local Republican committees within the District.

Q: When and where does the District Commitee meet?

A: The District Committee meets a minimum of 4 times per year, typically once a quarter. Meetings are called by the Chairman and are held within the District, or nearby. (Check the calendar for upcoming meetings.)

Q: Can anyone attend a District Committee meeting?

A: Yes. The 8th District has an open-door policy. Anyone may attend, but only Committee members may participate. Also, since Committee meetings are often held in locations with limited seating, we ask that visitors contact the District Chairman beforehand.

Q: Who votes on the State Central Committee?

A: Four of the District Committee members -- the Chairman and the 3 elected State Central members - are also voting members of the Republican State Central Committee, which is the governing body for the Republican Party of Virginia. They are your representatives to the State Party. The District Chairman also serves on the RPV Executive Committee.

Q: When and where does State Central meet?

A: The Republican State Central Committee meets a minimum of 4 times per year, usually once a quarter. Most meetings are at the RPV Headquarters in Richmond. One meeting is held during the annual Republican Advance in December, which is held in various locations around the state.

Q: Is there anyone else on the District Committee?

A: Yes. The District Committee elects a Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. The District Chairman may also appoint individuals to serve the Committee in various capacities, such as fund-raising, legal counsel, and communications. However, those additional members do not vote on the Committee, unless they are already voting members.

Q: Can I get involved with the District Committee?

A: Absolutely! There are many ways an individual can help the 8th District Committee and our local uits. Please contact the Chairman or your local committee to express your interest and discuss how you can best assist the Party in Northern Virginia.

Q: How can I find out more?

A: More details on the function of the District Committee are available in the Republican Party of Virginia's State Party Plan (see Art. IV).
