McCain set for GOP nomination
Congratulations to Sen. John McCain, who clinched the Republican nomination for President on March 4. McCain had won Virginia's GOP primary on Feb. 12, with half the vote statewide and 2/3 in the 8th District (see state and local results). Thanks also to the 31,000 Republicans in the 8th who voted in our primary!
State GOP leaders unite behind McDonnell/Bolling
Virginia's leading Republican elected and party officials have jointly endorsed the ticket of Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling for Governor and Lt. Governor in 2009. The endorsers include all Republican members of Congress, GOP leaders of the General Assembly, statewide officers of the Republican Party of Virginia, and all 11 GOP district chairmen. Ellmore, Singh file for Congress
Republicans Mark Ellmore and Amit Singh filed petitions to run for Congress in the 8th District this year. They will face off in a GOP primary on Tue., June 10. The winner will take on discredited incumbent Democrat Jim Moran in November. Read more about the 2008 campaign.
City and County chairmen elected
Voters in the four local committees of the 8th District have elected their Republican chairmen for 2008-10: Chris Marston in Alexandria City (re-elected in a canvass election on Feb. 23); Mark Kelly in Arlington County (elected in a canvass election on Apr. 29); Jim Hyland in Fairfax County (re-elected at the county convention on Apr. 12); and Jonathan Krive in Falls Church City (elected in a mass meeting on Feb. 9).
Moran's inappropriate remarks
• At 9-11 ceremony: Arlington's solemn observance in September 2006 was marred by partisan comments by Democrat Cong. Jim Moran, who attacked U.S. foreign policy and failed to recognize the sacrifices of American service personnel. See news coverage.
• Crude language: In June 2006, Moran told a crowd he would "earmark the sh**" out of federal spending bills, if Democrats take over the House. His crude comments showed poor taste and lack of fiscal discipline. Read the news story and Examiner editorial.
• MorAntics: The incumbent has a sorry record of ethical mistakes and personal problems. Check out www.MorAntics.com.
